Bubba Watson formally made his LIV Golf debut this week. Watson himself can’t play yet (recovering from knee surgery), but he was named captain of one of the teams at the Boston tournament and had previously officially revoked his PGA Tour membership card. Watson told reporters that he had to explain to his children why he would no longer be able to participate in their favorite PGA Tour event, and he also gently hinted to them that he might not be invited to the Masters as well (which is very likely, given the position of Augusta Golf Club management).
“For me, as a major Masters champion, this situation is ridiculous,” Bubba admitted. – I explained to my kids that I couldn’t play in the Travelers Championship tournament, which they love more than anything. Right now I’m eligible to play in the Masters, and I hope, pray, that they make the right decision. And the former champions will be able to perform.
I told the kids that there was this possibility that I wouldn’t be able to go to Club Augusta. And I explained to them that if I couldn’t perform as a former champion, then I didn’t want to perform there at all. Because that’s the wrong approach. I mean, it’s golf. And we’re all trying to be better players. There are other Tours around the world that somehow get along with each other, but when it comes to activities in the United States, it’s different. I wish things could work out so we could work together. Or at least the LIV Golf and PGA Tour representatives would compete against each other.
